1.5 Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are a computer-based simulated environment. Users create avatars and take part in this world as if in real life.

The benefits of this technology is that the younger generation will find this type of learning to be very familiar with their gaming and other computer use.

The disadvantage is that if you do not come from this generation, the learning curve just to take part in the world is enormous.

1.4 Social Networking

Social networking is part of Web 2.0 the newest thing to hit the web.

Web 2.0 or social networking is essentially internet users networking together in a collaborative way.

· Facebook

· Myspace

· Bebo

Social networking has a very important place in learning, by allowing users to collaborate with each other in a very convenient way.

However, the down side is that everything you post is open to the internet communities to view.

1.3 Communication Technologies

Synchronous versus Asynchronous

Synchronous is direct real time communication. All people are present at the same time.

· Instant messaging

· Voice chat

· Video conferencing

The benefits of Synchronous communication is that it is in real time, with instant response and feedback.

The disadvantages of this type of communication within the web environment is that all parties may not have the band width needed for quality of communication

Asynchronous

Asynchronous is communication not in real time. All people are not present at the same time.

· Email

· Blogs

· Pod casts

The benefit of this type of communication is that you can take part in the commucation when it suits you, when you have time. Also band width would not normally be a problem.

The disadvantage is that it can take time to get simple things done.
